Men's Volleyball Earns Split At Brooklyn Tri-Match On Saturday

Brooklyn, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team earned a split during Saturday's Tri-Match at Brooklyn College.

The Bloodhounds defeated the Bulldogs, 3-0 (25-23; 25-22; 25-16) in CUNYAC play before falling to visiting Russell Sage, 3-1 (28-26; 23-25; 22-25; 27-29)

John Jay moves to 14-6 and 6-2 in league play, while Brooklyn is 8-14 overall and 4-5 in the conference. Sage moves to 7-20.

The John Jay men's volleyball team hit an efficient clip, posting a straight-set triumph over the Bulldogs on Saturday.

Nick Fuentes paced the Bloodhounds with 12 kills and eight digs. Adam Bainey added nine kills, while Omar Alaoui and Sebastian Rodriguez each had six. Alex Bridgelall finished with a team-high 27 assists and 10 digs. 

Jason Lin powered Brooklyn with seven kills and two aces. Dion Csikortos tallied nine digs, while David Lema finished with 22 assists. 

Brooklyn jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set. The Bulldogs continued to add to the total, 15-9, following a kill from Aaron Siu. John Jay responded with an 8-1 run, taking a 17-16 lead following a kill from Steven Ajazi. 

Sebastian Rodriguez served up an ace that gave John Jay a 23-19 lead. Brooklyn notched a 4-1 run, thanks to a kill from Joaquin Calderon, but Fuentes ended the set with a kill. John Jay hit their highest percentage in the set, .321, only making three errors in 28 attempts.

The two teams traded points in the early portion of the second set before Brooklyn took a slight 7-5 lead, thanks to a kill from Lin. John Jay continued to claw back in the set and utilized a 5-1 run to close the set, 25-22, following a kill from Alaoui.

The Bloodhounds jumped out to the early advantage in the third set, 8-3, and carried that momentum throughout the set, closing out the match on a 17-12 run, as Bainey registered the game-winning kill.

The Bloodhounds edged the Gators, 28-26, in the first set, but Russell Sage rattled off the next three wins. 

Fuentes posted a double-double, finishing with 14 kills and 11 digs. Bainey and Alaoui each had 11 kills, while Micah Rossman finished with ten kills. Villarruz tallied a team-high 18 digs, while Jimmy Thinlay finished with 39 assists and one dig shy of a double-double (nine). 

Sage was powered by Dylan Fox, who tallied 20 kills, three aces, and nine digs. John Lindheimer finished with 14 kills and 15 digs. Anthony Guetti finished with 49 assists. 

Sage opened the contest on a 3-0 before John Jay answered with four straight points. They increased their lead to 15-11 following a kill from Lindheimer. The Bloodhounds continued to battle back, as Bainey killed the rally to put John Jay ahead 25-24 and ultimately sealed the first set win, 28-26.

The Bloodhounds opened the second set on a 6-2 run before the Gators answered with an 11-6 run, tying the set at 13. Sage finished the set on a 5-2 run to even the match at 1-1. John Jay continued their fast start in sets, going up 5-2 on a kill from Bainey. Sage closed the set on a 10-5 run, capped by a kill from Lindheimer.

The fourth set was a virtual stalemate until the Gators went on a 10-3 run to go up 19-15 on a kill from Fox. Both teams exchanged points down the stretch, but Sage finished the set scoring four of the final five points, including a kill from Sean Pingelski. 

The Bloodhounds will play two matches on Tuesday, March 18, both against Medgar Evers, beginning at 6:00 p.m.
