Men's Volleyball Sweeps Medgar Evers In Doubleheader CUNYAC Match At The Doghouse On Tuesday

New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team got back in the win column on Tuesday evening, as the Bloodhounds swept the Medgar Evers College Cougars, 3-0 (25-4; 25-5; 25-7); 3-0 (25-6; 25-8; 25-0)

The Bloodhounds hit their highest to-date percentage, .475, in the opening match against the Cougars. The Bloodhounds were led by Nick Fuentes, who finished with eight kills and two aces in two sets. Sebastian Rodriguez led the way with five digs. Alex Bridgelall had 15 assists with six aces, while Attila Nerette and Nate Whyte each tallied five aces. 

Kayshaun Higgs led Medgar with two kills. Shabbir Ahmed added a team-best five digs while Nkosi Fraser and Taosif Elahi had one assist each. 

The Bloodhounds opened the set on a 7-0 run, with Omar Alaoui holding serve and producing three aces. John Jay staged a 9-0 burst, upping their lead to 17-2, with Nerette recording two aces during this span. Bridgelall tallied three straight aces before a kill from Fuentes pushed the lead to 22-3, and Steven Ajazi ended the set with a kill. 

Medgar got on the board first in the second set but John Jay quickly rebounded with a 17-2 outburst, with Nerette adding three more aces. Bridgelall added three more aces to his total in the second set before Fuentes closed the set with two straight aces. 

In the third set, Whyte was up to serve for the Bloodhounds and commenced with two straight aces before a kill from Jaden Lamaree. Whyte added three more aces as John Jay led 7-0. Daniel Gonzalez Verdejo notched three aces during John Jay's 8-0 run as the lead swelled to 16-2. The Cougars got three straight points, with an ace from Fraser and a kill from Malik Williams. 

Eugene Villarruz served up four aces that put the Bloodhounds in position to close the match, with Whyte adding a kill and Evan Wandersee sealing the match with an ace.

The Bloodhounds and Cougars commenced their second game of the night, with the Bloodhound picking up right where they left off. John Jay set a new season-high, finishing the match hitting .525, highlighted by a .909 hitting percentage in the third set, in which they recorded ten kills in 11 total attempts. 

Ajazi and Nerette led the way with nine points, with Nerette finishing with nine aces and one dig. Ajazi had a team-high nine kills and one dig. Bridgelall had 13 assists, and Gonzalez Verdejo added eight.

Willimas had the lone kill for the Cougars, while Elahi had the lone assist. Jose Janvier had three digs, while Ahmed finished with two digs.


In set one, John Jay held a 4-0 lead before the Cougars trimmed the deficit in half, 4-2, with two mishits by the home team. Micah Rossman got two aces, upping the lead to 7-2.   Medgar got to within four, 9-5, following an attack error by Ajazi. The Bloodhounds regrouped, finishing the set on a 16-1 run, as Rodriguez had four aces and Villarruz finished the set with the final three aces.

Gonzalez Verdejo got the Bloodhounds to a 6-0 lead in the second set thanks to three aces by the veteran setter. Wandersee's ace, following two kills from Ajazi, made it 11-2 in favor of the home team.
Bridgelall tallied two more aces to run the lead to 16-3. John Jay closed the set on a 9-4 run, with Rossman adding another ace to his stat line.

Nerette held serve for all 25 Bloodhound points as he recorded three straight aces to make it 6-0 and closed the match with his ninth ace of the set. The nine aces by Nerette are tied for the 12th-highest this season in a three-set match. 

The Bloodhounds will host Baruch on Thursday evening, with first-serve set for 6:00 p.m.
