Men's Volleyball Drops CUNYAC Tilt At Home Against Baruch

New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team kept it close in the first two sets against the Baruch College Bearcats but fell 3-0 (24-26; 22-25; 18-25). 

The Bloodhounds fall to 14-9 and 6-5 in CUNYAC play, while the Bearcats improve to 13-7 and 12-0 in league play.

Nick Fuentes led the Bloodhounds with 18 kills and seven digs. Steven Ajazi, Omar Alaoui, and Micah Rossman each had four fills, with Ajazi recording two blocks. Eugene Villarruz had a team-best 10 digs, while Jimmy Thinlay posted 29 assists and four digs. 

Peter Gavroff paced Baruch with 14 kills, three aces, and four digs for 18.5 points. Noah Pak finished with nine kills and nine digs. Ryan Oommen served up 36 assists and three digs, while Ari Osmanaj finished with 2.5 blocks. 

The Bloodhounds opened up the first set on a 4-0 run, capped by a kill from Attila NeretteThe Bearcats rallied back with a 5-1 run, as Argjend Osmanaj recorded the kill to even the set at 5-5. John Jay extended their lead to 15-12 on a kill from Fuentes. 

Baruch increased their lead to 23-21 on a kill from Gavroff. The Bloodhounds kept pace as a kill from Ajazi evened the set at 24. Ari Osmanaj notched a kill before he closed the set with an assisted block with Gavroff. John Jay hit .242 in the opening set to Baruch's .257, while the Bearcats produced four blocks. 

The two teams traded points in the early portion of the second set before the Bearcats took a 9-5 lead on a mishit from Nerette. Baruch extended their advantage to 15-9 on a kill from Kory Lingenfelter before Fuentes killed the rally. John Jay closed out the set by outscoring Baruch, 12-10, but a kill from Gavroff sealed the set, 25-22. The Bloodhounds hit .200 in the set, while the visitors upped their percentage to .310.

John Jay trailed to start the third set before a block from Ajazi brought them to within one, 5-4. Baruch sparked a 7-2 run, capped by a kill from Lingenfelter that moved the lead to 12-6. The Bloodhounds rallied to within three, 16-13, on a 7-4 burst. Baruch scored nine of the final 14 points, as Haoxin Hu recorded the kill for the match-winner.

John Jay was limited to a .165 hitting percentage for the match, while Baruch hit .280.


John Jay returns to the court on Tuesday, March 25, as they head to CCNY for a 7:00 p.m. first-serve.
