Men's Volleyball Falls In Regular Season Finale On Senior Day To York

New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team fell to the visiting York College Cardinals, 3-2 (25-14; 21-25; 16-25; 25-9; 15-11) in five sets on Tuesday evening at The Doghouse. 

With the loss, the Bloodhounds finish the year at 15-11 and 7-7 in CUNYAC play, while the Cardinals conclude the season at 7-15 overall and 4-9 in league matches. John Jay will host Lehman on Tuesday, April 8, for the First Round of the CUNYAC Men's Volleyball Championships. First-serve is set for 6:00 p.m.

Before Tuesday's contest, the Bloodhounds honored their five seniors - Logan Ramos, Alex Bridgelall, Matthew Vong, Daniel Gonzalez Verdejo, and Evan Wandersee.
 


Nick Fuentes paced the Bloodhounds with 16 kills and seven digs. Attila Nerette had seven kills and two digs. Maxwell Law finished with 13 assists, two aces, and a block.

David Heyliger Jr. registered a double-double for the visiting Cardinals, posting a team-leading 19 kills and 15 digs. Sebastian Gomez added 17 kills and eight digs with two aces. Stanley Sanchez had 39 assists, four digs, and two aces.

The Bloodhounds raced out to a 5-2 advantage following a kill from Bridgelall. On the strength of a 10-4 run, the John Jay lead increased to 15-6 following a mishit from Heyliger. York got to within seven, 19-12, on a kill from Gomez, but the Bloodhounds finished the set on a 6-2 burst, capped by a kill from Gonzalez Verdejo. The Bloodhounds hit .353 in the opening set, only committing two attacking errors.

York opened the second set on a 3-1 run. The Cardinals held a 16-11 lead following an attack error from Vong. John Jay inched closer as Steven Ajazi recorded the kill, and the Bloodhounds trailed 17-14. The Cardinals held off the comeback attempt, scoring eight of the final 15 points in a 25-21 second-set win.

The Bloodhounds held a 3-1 lead to start the third set before York responded with a 13-5 run, as Gomez and Heyliger Jr. notched a combined seven kills as the visitors held a 14-8 lead. John Jay trimmed the deficit down to five, 16-11, on a kill from Nerette, but York didn't relinquish the lead, closing the set on a 9-5 run as Ian McIntosh recorded the set-winning ace. The Cardinals hit .545 in the third set and limited the Bloodhounds to just a .192 hitting percentage, going up two sets to one.

The Cardinals opened the fourth set with two straight points, including an ace from Sanchez. John Jay rallied, going ahead 19-9 as Fuentes and Nerette combined for seven kills during the run. The Bloodhounds finished the set and evened the match at 2-2 with a 6-0 run, capped by Law's second ace.

In the fifth and final set, the two teams exchanged points before Gomez registered a kill and an ace that gave York a 7-5 lead. Following the two teams switching sides, Omar Alaoui recorded a kill that made it 8-6 in favor of York. The Cardinals staged a 5-0 run, pushing the lead to 13-6, and forcing John Jay to call for time. When play resumed, the Bloodhounds used a 4-1 burst to get to within four, 14-10, as York called for time. Jaden Lamarre recorded a kill that cut the York lead further, but Heyliger Jr. ended the match with a kill.

This was John Jay's first loss against the Cardinals in ten matches, as they last fell to York back on March 17, 2016 at York (3-1). The last time the Bloodhounds dropped a match to the Cardinals at The Doghouse was March 19, 2015, also a 3-1 decision.
