Angie Nieves Tabbed CUNYAC Softball Coach of the Year; Lindsay Ogden Named Pitcher of the Year; Six Student-Athletes Named All-Stars

Flushing, NY - After the perfect CUNYAC season, the newly-minted and three-time softball league champions, the John Jay Bloodhounds, earned postseason accolades. 

Angie Nieves was named Coach of the Year while second-year pitcher Lindsay Ogden was tabbed Pitcher of the Year. Angelina Schoelles was named to the Sportsmanship Team while six Bloodhounds collected All-Star recognition.

Kendal Bryant, Rylea Sandel, Maleea Gallaspy, Olivia Paoli, Natalie Graham, and Ogden received All-Star honors.
 



Nieves is the second-ever Bloodhound coach to win Coach of the Year honors. In her first year at the helm, Nieves guided John Jay to its second-straight 30-win season, securing the program's third straight league title. In program history, 2025 marked the first time the Bloodhounds went undefeated in conference play, notching a 10-0 record. Through May 11, the Bloodhounds ranked seventh in scoring (7.79 runs per game), 10th in total runs (304), 12th in the nation in batting average (.364), 13lth in on-base percentage (.432), 19th in doubles (78), 21st in RBIs (261), and 27th in hits (402).  

In winning the award, Ogden became John Jay's second-ever Pitcher of the Year, joining former Bloodhound standout and current assistant coach, Jailene Santiago. The second-year right-hander was dominant in the circle, as she sported a 13-4 record with a 2.33 ERA, to go along with 115 strikeouts in 108.1 innings. Ogden held batters to a .195 batting average. In league play, she went 3-0 with a 0.78 ERA.


Schoelles reached the 100-hit club and now stands at 130 for her career. The Bayside, NY native had five multi-hit games this season, highlighted by a 3 for 5 day against Drew in game two of the doubleheader.


Bryant made an immediate impact in her first season at John Jay. The Vineland, NJ native finished first in the league in average (.482), slugging (.825), on-base percentage (.560), and home runs (10). She ranked 10th nationally in on-base percentage, 20th in the nation in average, 33rd in home runs, and top-50 in RBIS.


Sandel capped off her stellar Bloodhound career. The Deer Park, TX native was one of two Bloodhounds this season to reach the 200 career hit milestone and now stands at 248. The veteran shortstop finished the season fourth in the league in average (.426), fifth in on-base percentage (.479), and paced the conference with 44 RBIs.


Gallaspy joined Sandel in getting her 200th career hit, as she now has 211. The Murrieta, CA native was fifth in the league in hitting this season at .404, finishing second with 55 hits and 41 runs scored. Gallaspy was a threat to steal on the base paths, finishing with a career-high 17.


Paoli thrived in her first season at John Jay, finishing among the top ten in the conference in hitting (.374), slugging percentage (.583), on-base percentage (.447), fourth in RBIs (30), and fifth in hits (43). She connected on five home runs during the year, good for third in the league.  


This season, Graham and Ogden proved to be a vital 1-2 combination inside the circle. Graham finished second in ERA (3.41) and held batters to a .273 average. She finished with 53 strikeouts while recording 11 wins, the second most in CUNYAC.
