Women's Volleyball Earns Split In Regular Season Opener Against NJCU And Colby-Sawyer

New York, NY - The defending 2024 CUNYAC women's volleyball champions, the John Jay Bloodhounds, opened their 2025 campaign at the Doghouse, hosting New Jersey City University Gothic Knights and the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers.

The Bloodhounds earned a split of the two matches, falling in the opener to NJCU, 3-0 (23-25; 19-25; 19-25) before securing their first victory of the season, defeating Colby-Sawyer, 3-1 (23-25; 25-10; 25-18; 25-21).

John Jay vs. NJCU

The Bloodhounds and Gothic Knights were pitted in a tight contest to open the season, with NJCU edging out the Bloodhounds en route to a 3-0 victory.

Newcomer Jadyn Orava led the way for John Jay with six kills and 11 digs. Returners Nina Bongiovanni and Hailey Waugaman added two aces, with Theresa Schmitt adding an ace as well. Emilia Cascapera had three blocks with Orava contributing two. Adrienne Xiao had 15 assists in her first match at John Jay. 

Kai Fitzpatrick led the way for the visitors with 12 kills and five aces, while Elisabeth Brito added ten digs.

Both teams traded points over the early portion of the match before the Bloodhounds sparked a 7-1 run in taking a 13-7 lead. The Gothic Knights rallied back with a 13-5 burst to tie the set at 19 before a service ace and a kill from Fitzpatrick put the visitors ahead, 22-21. Bongiovanni notched the kill, knotting the set at 23, but a block from Munachim Nwobu and Diane Pugay sealed the set win.

In the second set, NJCU jumped ahead to a 9-5 lead on a kill from Nwobu. The visitors extended their lead to 21-13 on an ace from Jenilsa Pichardo. The Bloodhounds staged a rally, scoring six of the following nine points to cut the deficit to 24-19 on a kill from Orava, but a service error sealed the point for NJCU.

In the final set, John Jay grabbed an early 3-1 lead before the Gothic Knights used a 9- 6 spurt to take a 10-7 lead following an ace from Pichardo. The two teams traded points before a kill from Brianna Meanson increased NJCU's lead to 15-13. NJCU finished the contest on a 10-6 run for its first win of the year.

John Jay vs. Colby Sawyer

Despite dropping the first set of the final match of the day, the Bloodhounds found their rhythm in the second set, which propelled them to a 3-1 victory. Xiao finished with 43 assists and 15 digs, both career-highs, with Orava adding 20 kills (career-best). Martinez added 20 digs. 

Madison Sinatro led the way for the Chargers with 13 digs while Brooke Tasker added eight kills for the visitors.

The Bloodhounds held a 14-10 lead following an attack error from Alexis Mandrino. The Chargers forged forward with a 7-2 run, thanks to a kill from Tasker as they took a one-point lead, 17-16. The Bloodhounds rallied, scoring six of the following 11 points, as Xiao notched a set-tying ace to square the set at 22. Colby-Sawyer secured the set after an attack error by John Jay.

John Jay fell behind 3-1 in the second before their fortunes started to turn, staging an 8-2 run that gave them a 10-5 lead thanks to a kill from Cascapera. The Bloodhounds continued to build upon that momentum, going on a 12-2 run that produced five aces from Madison Mullan, Xiao (2), and Orava (2). Bongiovanni capped the set with a kill as the Bloodhounds secured their first set win of the season. John Jay hit .364 during the second set.

The two squads traded points in the early part of the third set before the Bloodhounds created separation, going ahead 14-9, capped by three straight kills, two coming from Orava. Colby-Sawyer evened the set at 16, but a 9-2 run from John Jay secured the set win as Kaylin Hanten notched back-to-back aces.

In the final set, the Bloodhounds trailed 9-6 before fighting back in the set. Xiao recorded a kill that tied the set at 14 and set up another run, this one a 7-3, as Cascapera notched the kill. Colby-Sawyer got to within three, 24-21, on an ace from Addison Sasnett, but Orava finished the match off with a kill.

The Bloodhounds will make their first road trip of the season when they head to Langhorne, PA, to take on Cairn on September 4.
