Women's Volleyball Posts First Sweep Of 2025 In Road Triumph Over Cairn On Thursday Evening

Langhorne, PA - The John Jay women's volleyball team returned to the court on Thursday evening for their first road contest of the season as they outlasted Cairn University Highlanders, 3-0 (26-24; 25-22; 27-25) at the Mason Activity Center.

The Bloodhounds move to 2-1 on the season while the Highlanders suffered their first defeat, falling to 3-1 on the year.

CUNYAC Player of the Week Jadyn Orava led the way with 13 kills while adding two blocks and six digs. Teammate Emilia Cascapera added 12 kills and seven digs. CUNYAC Rookie of the Week Adrienne Xiao produced 24 assists and four aces. Lizbeth Martinez led John Jay with 20 digs.

Cairn was paced by Marah Lehman, who finished with nine kills and ten digs, while Anna Dow recorded 23 assists, ten digs, and an ace.

The Bloodhounds found themselves trailing midway through the first set, 14-7. The Highlanders increased their advantage to 22-14 following a kill from Bella Manthe. John Jay came roaring back in the contest, staging a 12-2 run, capped by an ace from Xiao that clinched the first set, 26-24.

Momentum shifted back and forth as both sides traded points to start the second set. A kill from Cascapera tied the set at 15, which ignited an 8-1 run, capped by a Theresa Schmitt ace that brought John Jay's lead to 22-16. Cairn mounted a comeback, scoring five of the following six points, thanks to an ace from Manthe, that brought the Highlanders to within two, 23-21. Madison Mullan killed the rally before Orava ended the set with another kill as John Jay went ahead 2-0 in the match.

Cairn opened the third set with a 4-0 run before John Jay answered with three straight points. The visitors fought their way back in the set, outscoring the Highlanders, 12-7, with Mullan serving up two consecutive aces that tied the set at 19-19, forcing Cairn to take a timeout. When play resumed, it was back and forth with both teams exchanging points until an attack error from Lehman set up match point for John Jay. Cascapera delivered the final salvo, killing the rally as John Jay secured their first road win of the season.

John Jay will close out the week in Pennsylvania as they will travel to Wilkes-Barre, PA, for the Wilkes Tri-Match, in which they will take on Delaware Valley at 1:00 p.m., followed by the hosts, Wilkes, at 3:00 p.m.
