Women's Volleyball Sweeps Maritime On Thursday Evening

Throggs Neck, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team defeated the Maritime Privateers, 3-0 (25-16; 25-17; 28-26) on Thursday evening at the Risenberg Gymnasium.

The Bloodhounds (5-2) controlled the match with efficient hitting and strong serving, finishing with 37 kills, 17 aces, and a .245 team hitting percentage. The Privateers (4-4) battled late to extend the third set, but were held to a .084 hitting clip overall.

John Jay's Jadyn Orava paced the Bloodhounds with 19 kills on a .455 hitting percentage while adding 10 digs and five aces. Lizbeth Martinez tallied a team-leading 12 digs while Madison Mullan matched Orava with five aces.

Maritime was led by Addison Weist, who had nine kills and four aces. Mikaela Thiel registered 20 assists while Olivia Casabona posted 14 digs.

The Bloodhounds staged a 6-0 run in the first set before posting a 15-6 run in the latter portion of the set following a kill from Orava. Maritime responded with a quick 4-0 spurt before Orava closed the set with a kill.


The second set followed a similar script, as the Bloodhounds jumped out to a 6-3 lead before Maritime narrowed the gap with an ace from Weist. John Jay answered back with a 15-7 outburst, going up 20-11 following a kill from Alex Overkamp. Orava notched the kill that made it set point before finishing with an ace.


In the third and final set, the Bloodhounds raced out to a 10-3 lead, with Mullan producing four aces during this span. Maritime got to within two, 11-9, following a kill from Grace Devaney. The Privateers continued to chip away, as they got to within one, 15-14.


Maritime used a 6-2 run to tie the set at 23 on a kill from Weist before an attack error gave John Jay the point, giving them a 24-23 advantage. An ace from Olivia Casabona put Maritime ahead 25-24, before Weist had a kill that gave them a 26-25 edge.


A kill from Orava set up an ace from Hailey Waugaman, but an attack error from Weist gave the match to the Bloodhounds.


The Bloodhounds gear up for their second home tri-match of the season as they will welcome Ramapo and Old Westbury on Saturday.
