Women's Volleyball Sweeps Home Tri-Match Against Ramapo And Old Westbury

New York, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team extended its win streak to four straight after securing a sweep of a home tri-match on Saturday, blanking both Ramapo, 3-0 (25-20; 25-16; 25-21) and Old Westbury, 3-0 (25-13; 25-12; 25-22).

The Bloodhounds move to 7-2 overall on the season, while the Roadrunners fall to 5-2, and the Panthers stand at 1-3 on the season.

John Jay 3, Ramapo 0 (25-20; 25-16; 25-21)
The Bloodhounds posted a dominant performance over the Roadrunners, winning in straight sets, 25-20, 25-16, and 25-21 in the first match of Saturday's Tri-Match at The Doghouse. Jadyn Orava stood out with a team-high 16 kills, to go along with five digs and four aces for the Bloodhounds. Madison Mullan served a team-leading five aces and five blocks. Adrienne Xiao notched 24 aces while Lizbeth Martinez and Theresa Schmitt combined for 23 digs, with Martinez leading the team with 12.

Ramapo was paced by Asya Akar, who had 12 kills and eight digs. Katie Bishop recorded 24 assists for the Roadrunners.

The visitors used a 6-1 run to build an 11-9 lead thanks to an ace from Bishop before the Bloodhounds staged their comeback, rattling off an 8-3 run, taking a 17-14 lead following an ace from Xiao. Ramapo rallied off three straight points to tie the set at 17 before John Jay closed the set on a 9-3 run, with an ace from Hailey Waugaman and the finishing point on the kill from Mullan. 

In the second set, both teams traded points in the early portion of the set, before the Bloodhounds started to create separation on the scoreboard as an ace from Xiao gave John Jay a 15-11 advantage. Ramapo closed the gap to two, 15-13, but the Bloodhounds sealed the second set on a kill from Mullan, capping the 10-3 run.

The third set was evenly played for the majority of the set. Mullan produced back-to-back aces that gave the home team a 16-13 lead, but Ramapo kept pace, as Valentina Palen recorded the kill to get the Roadrunners to within one. John Jay closed out the match scoring seven of the final 11 points, as Orava delivered an emphatic kill, giving the Bloodhounds the victory.


The Bloodhounds produced 15 aces and hit .179 as a whole while limiting the Roadrunners to just a .079 hitting percentage. John Jay had 10 blocks, the five from Mullan, while Nina Bongiovanni and Waugaman each had three credited blocks for the match.

John Jay 3, Old Westbury 0 (25-13; 25-12; 25-22)
The Bloodhounds carried the momentum into the final match of the afternoon, as they were pitted against the Old Westbury Panthers, who had previously dropped a 3-0 decision to Ramapo in the second match of the afternoon.

The Bloodhounds hit .338 in the match, behind a robust .423 attack in the first set. John Jay tallied 36 kills on 71 swings. Mullan led the team with 11 kills while Lizbeth Martine contributed eight aces and six kills.

Stephanie Maser paced Old Westbury with nine kills and two aces.

The Bloodhounds claimed a 6-2 lead following a kill from Alex Overkamp. The Panthers rallied back, trimming the deficit down to two, 8-6, on a kill from Stephanie Velez. John Jay utilized a 7-0 run, in which Theresa Schmitt and Jadyn Orava had five kills, with Mullan capping the run with a kill that made it 15-6. The visitors posted four straight points, with two aces from Stephanie Samulde that made it 20-13 in favor of John Jay. The Bloodhounds closed out the first set five straight points, which included another kill from Schmidt.

It was all John Jay in the early portion of the second set as Martinez recorded five straight aces as the Bloodhounds claimed a 7-0 lead before Old Westbury got on the board. John Jay closed out the second set behind an 11-4 run, as Orava notched the kill to put John Jay ahead 2-0 in the match.

Old Westbury came out in the third set, leading 4-1 on an ace from Paige Herbert. The Panthers held a 9-7 lead on a kill from Herbert but John Jay answered back with a 6-2 spurt in retaking the lead, 13-11.

The Panthers continued to rally back as a pair of aces from Stephanie Maser brought the visitors to within one, 17-16. The two teams exchanged points, with the Bloodhounds holding a slim 21-20 edge after a kill from Maser.

Martinez added back-to-back kills, as John Jay led 23-20, but Old Westbury continued to battle back, as they got to within one, 23-22. Bongiovanni put the closing stamp on the match with an ace as the Bloodhound secured the sweep.

John Jay resumes CUNYAC play on Tuesday, September 23, as they welcome the CCNY Beavers to The Doghouse. First-serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
