Women's Volleyball Extends Streak To Six In Road Victory At Sarah Lawrence

Bronxville, NY - The John Jay women's volleyball team continues its winning ways on Thursday evening, posting its sixth straight victory with a 3-1 road triumph over the Sarah Lawrence Gryphons.

The Bloodhounds (9-2) were led by CUNYAC and AVCA Player of the Week, Jadyn Orava, who posted her fifth double-double of the season, finishing with a season-high 22 kills and ten digs to finish with 24 points, the fourth time this season she has recorded 20 or more points in a match.

The Gilbert, AZ converted on a .442 hitting percentage on route to a match high in kills. Setter Adrienne Xiao dished out 35 assists while serving up a career-best nine aces from the service line as part of a team total of 17. Madison Mullan added eight kills to round out a balanced attack.

Defensively, John Jay limited Sarah Lawrence to a .104 hitting percentage as Athena Kazos led the attack for the Gryphons with 13 kills. Sophia Costa added 11 digs while Eva Anderson tallied ten digs. Costa notched 25 assists on the evening as well.

The Gryphons got off to a fast start, leading 3-0 before the Bloodhounds rallied back and staged an 8-0 run with Xiao serving up five aces, including three straight to build a 19-9 advantage. Mullan notched the kill to close out the first set with a 10-point victory, 25-15.

Sarah Lawrence got back in the match in the second set, opening the set on an 8-3 spurt and later extending their lead to 13-4. John Jay used a 6-3 burst to get to within four, 23-19, but a pair of mishits gave the Gryphons the second set.

The Bloodhounds returned to their form in the third set as Xiao served up two straight aces before Orava scored the next three points, giving the Bloodhounds a 6-0 lead. Orava added to the lead with two aces that made it 9-1.

A 10-2 run by Sarah Lawrence saw the home team trail by a 14-13 count before another kill from Orava gave the point to the Bloodhounds. The two teams traded points before Mullan closed the set with a kill.

The visitors opened the fourth set on a 9-2 run as Xiao added to her career night from the service line. Nina Bongiovanni added a kill to give John Jay a 20-11 advantage as the Bloodhounds closed out the match on a 5-0 run, with Bongiovanni adding two aces.

John Jay closes out the month of September on Tuesday, as they travel to Mount Saint Vincent for a 6:00 p.m. first-serve.
