New York, NY - Behind four Bloodhounds scoring in double-figures, the John Jay men's basketball team held off a late comeback attempt from the visiting Medgar Evers College Cougars at The Doghouse to pick up a 64-57 CUNYAC victory on Wednesday evening.
John Jay (4-12; 2-3 CUNYAC) was led by
Jamir Stewart, who finished with a game-high 18 points as the Baldwin, NY native converted a perfect 8 of 8 from the free-throw line while dishing out a team-best five assists in 36 minutes of action.
Keyshawn Miller filled up the stat sheet, producing his fourth double-double of the season and tenth of his Bloodhound tenure, finishing with 13 points on an efficient 5 of 10 shooting display from the field while pulling down ten rebounds. He led the way with three steals, four assists, and a block in 36 minutes of work. Both
Aidony Nivar and
Adrian Kopec each netted ten points while Kopec pulled down seven boards. Nivar added five caroms and three steals in 32 minutes of play.
Medgar Evers had three players score in double-figures, led by Joash Beaton, who tallied a team-best 17 points on 8 of 19 shooting from the field. Ahmed Toure registered a double-double for the visitors, finishing with 12 points on 5 of 8 shooting while grabbing a game-high 15 rebounds, 11 of which came on the defensive end. Nicholas Bocharov added 10 points.
The Bloodhounds opened the contest on a blistering 16-1 run over the first 5:16 of the contest, converting 4 of 7 from the field and 3 of 4 from the outside as Stewart led the way with five points. Medgar was held to a 0 of 6 start from the field. The Cougars responded with a 14-0 run of their own over the next four minutes, hitting on 7 of 8 from the field with Toure and Beaton combining for 12 points as they trailed 16-15 at the 10:11 mark. John Jay was held to just 0 of 4 shooting while committing four turnovers over this span.
The two teams couldn't find their shooting range down the stretch, going a combined 6 of 27 from the field with the Bloodhounds holding on to a 27-24 halftime lead following a made free-throw by Miller. John Jay held Medgar without a made three-pointer in the opening 20 minutes (0 of 9) while the Cougars defense contained the Bloodhounds shooting from the field (25.0 percent). The visitors held a 26-19 edge on the boards in the first half.
John Jay opened the second half on a 13-4 burst, as Stewart capped the burst with a driving layup to push the Bloodhounds' lead to 40-28. From there, the visitors responded, outscoring John Jay, 13-6, over the next 5:11 to pull within five, 46-41, with 8:03 showing on the game clock as Beaton converted on an elbow pull-up jumper.
The Bloodhounds held an eight-point edge, 60-52, with 2:14 left to go in regulation following a contested layup by
Amare Jordan off the pass from Kopec. Beaton answered back for the visitors with another step-back jumper.
Toure stole the ball away from Stewart, and Bocharov spotted up in the corner, in front of his team's bench, and drilled the three-pointer off the pass from Nathan Sanderson that inched Medgar Evers closer, 60-57, after they called a timeout.
Following the timeout, Bocharov continued to power his team, deflecting the ball away from Stewart as Medgar looked for the tying bucket. The visitors called two timeouts in succession to draw up a play, but following the timeout, Toure stepped out of bounds, giving the ball back to the Bloodhounds with 18 seconds left to go.
Stewart was fouled on the ensuing possession and sank both attempts, as John Jay went ahead by five, 62-57, before the senior guard was sent back to the charity stripe as he sealed the game from the line and John Jay's second league victory of the season.
Both teams finished the contest shooting over 35.0 percent from the floor while the Bloodhounds stifled the Cougars' three-point shooting, holding them to just 15.0 percent from the outside (3 of 20). Medgar Evers held a 46-34 edge on the boards, including doubling up on the offensive glass (16-8).
The Bloodhounds will have a quick turnaround, traveling to Brooklyn College on Friday evening for a 7:15 p.m. tipoff against the Bulldogs.
