New York, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team split Saturday's tri-match against Wilkes and Manhattanville. The Bloodhounds fell to the Colonels, 3-1, before earning their first win of the season under first-year head coach
Jonathan Vasquez.
Wilkes 3, John Jay 1
The Bloodhounds fell to the visiting Wilkes in a competitive, four-set contest that saw momentum shift mid-match. After dropping the opening set 25-19, the Bloodhounds responded with a gritty 25-17 win in the second set to even the match at one apiece.
However, Wilkes regained control, taking the third set 25-21 and closing out the match with a 25-18 in the fourth.
Adria Galve led the Bloodhounds with 11 kills, while
Nick Fuentes contributed 10 kills and added consistent defense on the back line. The tandem of
Maxwell Law and
Jimmy Thinlay anchored the offense with 14 assists apiece, showing poise in distribution against a strong Wilkes block. On defense,
Logan Ramos paced the team with 12 digs.
Wilkes' offensive attack was powered by Carter Otto (12 kills) and Aidan Hunter (10 kills), with Aaron Ladd chipping in five kills, a team-high nine blocks, and four aces.
John Jay 3, Manhattanville 0
Later in the afternoon, John Jay rebounded in commanding fashion, sweeping visiting Manhattanville (0-3) 25-22, 25-17, 25-23. The Bloodhounds' balanced offensive attack and tenacious defense kept the Valiants off rhythm from the outset.
Fuentes led the charge with a match-high 15 kills, using a .440 attack percentage to keep the Manhattanville defense stretched.
Joshua Acevedo added a team-high 11 kills and
Adam Bainey chipped in eight in support. On the service line,
Maxwell Law provided his usual intensity, adding two aces to help swing key points in the opening sets.
Defensively,
Logan Ramos (14 digs) and
Jimmy Thinlay (27 assists) anchored the backcourt and facilitated a disciplined offense that routinely forced Manhattanville into errors. The Bloodhounds' blocking presence was solid as well, with
Attila Nerette and Bainey each recording two stuffs to disrupt the Valiants' attack.
Manhattanville's Kyle Simmons played well in defeat, posting a team-high 13 kills and three aces, and Trevor Kolar chipped in double-figure offense with 10 kills.
The Bloodhounds return to the court on Tuesday, February 3 as they travel to Yeshiva for a 7:00 p.m. first serve.
