Brooklyn, NY - After dropping the first set, the John Jay men's volleyball team outlasted the Brooklyn College Bulldogs, earning a 3-1 (17-25; 25-16; 25-18; 25-23) road conference triumph on Tuesday evening.
The Bloodhounds improved to 4-3 on the season and garnered their first CUNYAC win under head coach
Jonathan Vasquez as John Jay moved to 1-1. Brooklyn falls to 3-3 and 0-1 in league play.
Nick Fuentes powered John Jay with a match-high 12 kills while
Micah Rossman and
Joshua Acevedo added nine kills apiece. Setter
Jimmy Thinlay orchestrated the offense with a team-best 17 assists while
Maxwell Law added 14 assists.
The Bloodhound defense chipped in 39 digs as a unit, with Rossman leading the way with 12 digs.
Logan Ramos added nine digs.
For Brooklyn, Joaquin Calderon led all Bulldogs with ten kills while Miguel Trejo paced the visitors with 27 assists.
Brooklyn jumped out to an 8-3 lead following an ace from Aiden Melecio. The Bloodhounds cut the deficit down to three, 14-11, and again at 19-16 following a kill from Acevedo. The Bulldogs finished the set on a 6-1 run, capped by a kill from Matthew Kadatsky.
John Jay regained their composure as Fuentes and Rossman sparked the scoring early. The Bloodhounds outscored Brooklyn, 10-7, as a kill from
Quez Martin pushed the lead up to 20-13. John Jay closed the set with a pair of kills from
Steven Ajazi and
Adria Galve to even the match at 1-1. The Bloodhounds hit on .423 while limiting Brooklyn to .250.
The Bloodhounds commenced the third set on an 8-3 lead following a kill from Thinlay.
Adam Bainey served up an ace to extend the lead to 10-3. Brooklyn rallied in the set to trim the deficit down to 13-10. John Jay erupted on a 9-4 run, capped by an emphatic block from Ajazi and Martin. A service error by the Bulldogs sealed the point as John Jay went ahead, 2-1.
In the fourth set, Bainey capped a 6-2 burst with another ace. The visitors jumped ahead 14-9 on an attack error. From there, Brooklyn rebounded on an 8-2 run as an ace from Calderon gave the Bulldogs a 17-16 edge. John Jay finished the set outscoring Brooklyn, 9-6, as Acevedo soared high for the kill, and John Jay posted a 25-23 win.
For the match, the Bloodhounds hit .267 on 105 total attacks and posted 47 kills. Brooklyn was held to .163 hitting on 98 total attacks while notching 34 kills.
John Jay will look for back-to-back wins as they host Purchase on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
