Women’s Basketball Extends Win Streak To Five Straight In Regular Season Sweep Of Medgar Evers On Friday Evening

Brooklyn, NY - Five Bloodhounds reached double-figures as the John Jay women's basketball team claimed its fifth consecutive victory. The Bloodhounds completed a regular-season sweep of the Medgar Evers College Cougars, winning 87-72 on Friday evening.

The Bloodhounds now stand at 9-13 overall and 7-4 in CUNYAC contests. In league play, the Cougars dipped to 2-19 overall and 1-10.

Sophomore guard Briana Minick led the way for the visitors with a team-high 18 on 7 of 17 shooting while grabbing six rebounds, swiping a team-high five steals, and adding three assists in 27 minutes.

Junior forward Michaela Lattimore also contributed significantly, extending her double-double streak to 15 consecutive and 18th of the season after finishing with 17 points on 6 of 13 shooting while grabbing a team high 15 rebounds. The Morristown, NJ native added four steals and two assists in the victory.

Joining Minick and Lattimore in double figures, Essence Richardson tallied 15 points on 5 of 8 from the field in 17 minutes. Natalie Simonds chipped in 14 points while dishing out a team-best six assists and grabbed four rebounds in 32 minutes. Miah Crockett finished with ten points in 15 minutes.

Medgar Evers was paced by Alexis Davis and Moutiatou Djibring. Davis tallied a game-high 29 points on 13 of 27 shooting while grabbing 12 rebounds in 34 minutes. Djibring netted 24 points on 11 of 19 shooting while grabbing a game-best 21 rebounds, 13 on the defensive end, in 34 minutes.

Medgar Evers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before extending it to 7-4 on a Bryanna Merger three-pointer. John Jay responded with a 9-0 run, capped by a layup from Minick to take a 13-7 lead.

The Cougars rallied back on the strength of an 8-0 run to regain a 17-15 advantage after Aaliyah Lyons converted on a fastbreak layup. Richardson connected on a three-pointer on the ensuing Bloodhound possession with two minutes left in the first as John Jay led 18-17.

Alexis Jones hit on a jumper in the paint and drew contact to complete the three-point play. With a second left in the first quarter, Kailani Galan converted on a jumper off the feed from Richardson as John Jay went ahead 25-19.
The Cougars got to within two, 25-23, following two made free throws by Djibring to start the second quarter. John Jay used a 17-8 run to go up 42-32 following a Latitmore layup with 2:46 left to play before halftime. The Bloodhounds finished the quarter outscoring Medgar Evers, 10-9, as Minick stole the ball away from Djibring and converted the running jumper before the horn sounded as John Jay took a 52-42 lead into the break.

When play resumed, the Bloodhounds scored 12 of the first 20 points of the stanza in taking a 64-50 lead before Davis hit on a three-pointer from Lyons. Medgar Evers trickled the deficit down to seven, 64-57, and held on to a 67-59 advantage as Davis connected on a mid-range jumper before the buzzer sounded. 

Richardson hit one of two from the line to start the fourth quarter. The Bloodhounds started to hit on all cylinders, staging a 14-2 run as the John Jay lead swelled to 83-63 after Minick completed the three-point play from the free throw line with 6:27 remaining.

The Cougars outscored the Bloodhounds, 9-4, down the stretch with Minick converting the final field goal of the contest as the Bloodhounds secured their fifth straight win.

For the game, the Bloodhounds shot 39.5 percent from the field while converting 76.7 percent from the free-throw line (23 of 30).

Medgar Evers shot 36.8 percent from the field while only being sent to the line five times. The Cougars held a 57-46 edge on the boards while the Bloodhounds scored 25 points off 26 Medgar Evers turnovers.

The Bloodhounds return to the Doghouse on Wednesday, February 11, as they will host Brooklyn at 6:00 p.m.
