Men’s Volleyball Splits Saturday’s Tri-Match At Mount Saint Vincent; Sweeps Past Dolphins Before Falling To Elmira

Riverdale, NY - The John Jay men's volleyball team saw its three-match win streak halted after the Bloodhounds split Saturday's tri-match at Mount Saint Vincent.
 
John Jay defeated the host Dolphins, 3-0 (25-10; 25-17; 25-23) before dropping a four-set decision to Elmira (25-23; 23-25; 18-25; 20-25).
 
The Bloodhounds move to 3-3 overall on the season following Saturday's results.

The Bloodhounds outpaced the Dolphins in earning a three-set triumph to open up Saturday's tri-match.
 
Nick Fuentes led the offense with seven kills and a .313 hitting percentage, while Joshua Acevedo added six kills and Adam Bainey chipped in five as the team amassed 24 total kills.
Attila Nerette had two aces while Jimmy Thinlay registered 14 assists. Logan Ramos notched seven digs from the back row.
 
Raedon Nieves had 16 kills for UMSV and 17 points. Christian Ferrer had 18 assists while Roel Lucero ended with a team-high six digs.
 
John Jay seized command right from the first set, jumping out to an 18-5 lead behind early kills from Fuentes and Bainey before closing it out 25-10 on an ace from Maxwell Law.
 
The Bloodhounds continued that momentum into the second set, doubling up Mount Saint Vincent, 16-8, following a service error by the Dolphins. UMSV rallied to get within seven, 23-16, but a kill from Bainey established set point, which the Bloodhounds secured on a service error by Terrence Short.
 
The Dolphins withstood an early 3-1 burst to take a 5-3 lead following a kill from Raedon Nieves. UMSV evened the set at 14. The two squads traded off points as Nieves brought the home team even in the set at 23.
 
Fuentes set up John Jay for match point with a kill, and an attack error from Tyler Hanna clinched the match for the visitors, extending their win streak to three in the process.
For the match, the Bloodhound hit .222 while limiting the Dolphins to just a .025 percentage.

The Bloodhound outlasted Elmira in the first set, 25-23, but the Eagles rallied for a second set win, 25-23.
 
Elmira outlasted the Bloodhounds' late push in the third and fourth sets in picking the win.
 
Acevedo paced John Jay with a career-high 14 kills while recording 15.5 points. Fuentes added eight kills while Steven Ajazi finished with six.  Thinlay served up 25 assists while Ramos finished with 12 digs for John Jay.
 
Luke Jata had 20 kills on a .457 hitting percentage while contributing three blocks for 23 points for Elmira. Gabriel Staron added 14 kills and eight digs while Ethan Davenport finished with ten kills, four solo blocks, and three digs. Nick Rohman tallied 45 assists and seven digs.
 
The two teams were even for the majority of the set until the Bloodhounds went ahead by two, 17-15, on a kill from Acevedo and again at 19-17. Elmira went ahead 20-19 before John Jay posted two kills, one from Acevedo and newcomer Quez Martin, to take a 22-20 advantage. Bainey capped the first set with a kill from Law as the Bloodhounds secured the first point of the match.
 
The Eagles raced out to a 7-4 lead before the Bloodhounds evened things up in the second set. Ethan Davenport posted a kill that pushed Elmira's lead to 18-15 before the Bloodhounds used a 5-2 boost to even up the set at 19. Elmira closed the set on a kill from Dylan Vargas as the match was knotted at 1-1. Both teams hit well in the set, with John Jay converting at a .391 clip while Elmira posted a .423 hitting percentage on 15 kills and 26 total attempts.
 
In the third set, the Eagles soared to a 5-1 advantage. John Jay trailed 9-8 following a 7-4 run. The teams traded points until Elmira produced a 10-3 run to increase its lead to 24-17 on three from Jata, who secured the set win with a fifth kill.
 
In the fourth set, the Bloodhounds claimed a 6-3 advantage. The Eagles fought back with a 12-4 outburst to lead 15-10 following back-to-back kills from Davenport and Jata.  John Jay mounted a slim comeback, trailing 20-16, but Jata clinched the match with another kill.
 
The Bloodhounds will close out their four-match road trip on Tuesday, February 10, as they will resume CUNYAC play against the Brooklyn College Bulldogs.
 
First serve is set for 6:00 p.m.
