John Jay Athletics Mourns the Passing of Hall of Fame Coach Vince Maiorino

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The John Jay College Department of Athletics is saddened to announce the passing of Hall of Fame rifle coach and longtime Physical Education professor Vince Maiorino, who passed away on Saturday, June 20.

Maiorino served as the head coach of the John Jay rifle program for 17 seasons from 2002 until his retirement in 2018, building one of the most successful programs in college history. During his tenure, he became the winningest coach in John Jay Athletics history and guided the Bloodhounds to a program-record 14 Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference (MAC) Championships.

"Coach Maiorino's legacy extends far beyond championships and accolades," said Brandon Fieland, Interim Director of Athletics. "He was a mentor, educator, colleague, and friend whose dedication to his students and student-athletes helped shape the lives of so many. His impact on John Jay College and the sport of rifle will be felt for generations."

A respected leader within collegiate rifle, Maiorino was recognized as the MAC Coach of the Year three times, earning the honor in 2006, 2011, and 2017. His impact extended beyond competition as he served on the Board of MAC Officers as Executive Secretary, helping advance the sport and support student-athletes throughout the conference.

"Vince was a mentor who invested in his student-athletes and friends, always willing to share his knowledge, guidance, and encouragement," said head rifle coach Tom White, who coached together with Coach Maiorino at St. John's University. "Vince dedicated his life to education, coaching, and helping others achieve their potential. His impact reached far beyond the classroom and the firing line, shaping countless lives through his leadership, patience, and unwavering commitment to excellence. I am grateful for the lessons he taught, the friendship he shared, and the example he set. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest easy Coach. Thank you for everything."

In 2010, Maiorino received the prestigious Robert Ketzner Service Award, recognizing his dedication and service to the sport of collegiate rifle.

Beyond athletics, Maiorino devoted many years to John Jay College as a member of the Physical Education Department, where he educated and mentored generations of students. His passion for teaching, commitment to excellence, and genuine care for others left a lasting impression on countless student-athletes, colleagues, and members of the campus community.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions to John Jay Athletics and the rifle program, Maiorino was inducted into the John Jay Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019.

The John Jay Athletics family extends its deepest condolences to Vince's family, friends, former colleagues, alumni, and the many student-athletes whose lives he positively influenced throughout his distinguished career.
