Men's Basketball Falls to Staten Island in CUNYAC Opener

Box Score The men's basketball team lost to the College of Staten Island, 77-63, in the conference opener on Saturday afternoon at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds drop to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The Dolphins improve to 2-4 and 1-0 in CUNYAC. 

Sophomore Hakeem Animashaun led John Jay in scoring with 12 points, four rebounds, and a season-high and game-high four blocks. Senior MiKing Richardson and junior Luciano Cruz-Fernandez finished with 10 points each. Freshman Kyle LaGuardia recorded seven points, four rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Sophomore Doug Levy grabbed a game-high nine boards. Freshmen Myles Mills and Matt Hudzik swiped three steals apiece. 

With the score tied early in the first half, CSI scored seven straight to take an early 9-2 lead. Back-to-back three-pointers by Hudzik and Cruz-Fernandez cut the deficit down to one with 16:34 left in the first. Three minutes later, the visitors increased their lead to 20-10. Animashaun led the Bloodhounds on a 7-0 run as the forward scored six of the points. With John Jay trailing 24-21, Richardson converted a three-point play to tie the game with 7:05 left in the period. A three by Cruz-Fernandez gave the Bloodhounds their first lead of the contest. The Dolphins ended the half scoring five straight to hold a 38-33 advantage. 

CSI scored the first four points of the half but a layup by Animashaun cut the lead down to seven. With 15:01 remaining, the Dolphins led 56-41. John Jay responded on 9-0 run as Hudzik scored six straight points. Halfway through the second, Staten Island went back up 63-52 and would not look back. 

John Jay shot 20-for-50 (40.0%) from the floor, 4-for-13 (30.8%) from three, and 19-for-29 (65.5%) from the free-throw line. 

The Bloodhounds host Lehman College on Tuesday, December 5, for another conference game at 8:00 pm at the Doghouse. The game will be live streamed at www.johnjayathletics.com/watch
