Men's Basketball Loses Heartbreaker to Lightning; Lehman Scores 54 Points in Second Half

Box Score The men's basketball team suffered a tough loss to Lehman College, 92-86, on Tuesday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds fall to 2-4 on the season and 0-2 in the conference. The Lightning improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in CUNYAC. 

Hakeem Animashaun finished with a team-high 23 points and four rebounds. The sophomore went 11-for-14 from the free-throw line. Junior Essien Epps recorded 15 points, seven boards, and a team-high three steals. Senior MiKing Richardson fell one point shy of a double-double with nine points and career-high and game-high 10 assists. Junior Luciano Cruz-Fernandez and freshman Matt Hudzik registered 13 points each. Sophomore Doug Levy had seven rebounds. 

The first three minutes went back-and-forth as there were four lead changes. A three-pointer by Hudzik increased John Jay's lead to four with 16:36 left in the first half.  One minute later, the guests regained the lead 9-8. The Bloodhounds responded on a 9-1 run to go up 17-10. Animashaun's layup increased John Jay's lead to 10 with 10:41 left in the half. The Lightning quickly cut the deficit to 10 but two straight baskets by Animashaun and Epps put the Bloodhounds back ahead 30-20. John Jay went into halftime with a 49-38 advantage. 

Animashaun opened the second with a layup and a three by Epps increased the lead to 13. Two free-throws by Animashaun gave the Bloodhounds their largest lead of the contest, 57-43. The Lighting responded on a 11-2 run to trail by five. Cruz-Fernandez followed by draining a three but two minutes later, Lehman cut the lead down to four. With 7:02 left in the contest, the Lightning tied the score at 73 apiece. There were three lead changes in the next three minutes as the score was once again tied 82-82. With just under 1:00 remaining, the Lightning led 88-83. Cruz-Fernandez connected on a three to cut the deficit to two but Lehman scored four straight points to hold on for a 92-86 win. 

John Jay went 27-for-50 (54.0%) from the field, 9-for-19 (47.4%) from three, and 23-for-32 (71.9%) from the free-throw line.

The Bloodhounds travel to Hunter College on Friday, December 8, for a conference game at 7:00 pm.
