Epps' Double-Double Not Enough in Men's Basketball's Loss to Hunter

Box Score The men's basketball team fell to Hunter College, 67-55, on Friday night at the Hunter Sportsplex. The Bloodhounds drop to 2-5 on the season and 0-3 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Hawks improve to 4-4 overall and 3-0 in the conference. 

Junior Essien Epps recorded his first double-double of the season with a team-high 15 points, a season-high and game-high 11 rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Sophomore Doug Levy fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 13 points, nine rebounds, and a season-high and game-high three blocks. Senior MiKing Richardson and sophomore Hakeem Animashaun finished with seven points each. 

A free-throw by Animashaun and a layup by Levy gave the Bloodhounds an early lead. With 16:04 left in the first half, the score was tied 13-13. Hunter followed with seven straight points but a three by Levy cut the deficit to four. With John Jay trailing 23-18, the Hawks went on a 7-0 run. The Bloodhounds responded with three straight baskets by junior Jordan Aiken, Levy, and Epps. Hunter ended the half on a 7-0 run to lead 37-25. 

Animashaun opened the second with a layup. Three-and-a-half minutes into the period, the Hawks increased its advantage to 43-28. Richardson, Levy, and Aiken made back-to-back-to-back layups to cut the lead back down to nine. Four minutes later, Hunter went back up 49-35 with 8:07 left to go and held on for a 12-point win.  

John Jay finished 20-for-56 (35.7%) from the field, 6-for-22 (27.3%) from three, and 9-for-15 (60.0%) from the free-throw line.
