John Jay Celebrates Successful Sigma Gamma Rho 1922 Swim Clinic

New York, NY - The John Jay Swimming program, in collaboration with the John Jay College's Office of Institutional Advancement and the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc (SGR)., brought the community together with another successful "Swim 1922" Clinic back on June 22.

The afternoon-long clinic, hosted at the John Jay College Pool in the heart of Manhattan, is part of Sigma Gamma Rho's Swim 1922 Initiative with USA Swimming. The initiative is "the first partnership of its kind with the intent to increase swim participation and decrease drowning rates in the African American community."

Young community members, ages 6-18, were provided with swim caps and goggles for a day of fun and swim education, encouraging water safety and life-saving swim skills.

This year's clinic was attended by more than 100 participants in its second year hosted at John Jay College.

"It has been a rewarding and fulfilling opportunity to have offered free swimming lessons to the John Jay student community, as well as the greater community of Manhattan" commented John Jay's head women's swim coach and aquatics director, Miguel Escalante. "For the second straight year, we offered water safety lessons to over 100 participants. We are thankful and appreciative for our partnership with Sigma Gamma Rho to facilitate a wonderful event that impacts so many lives."
