Two-Time CUNYAC Women's Volleyball Champions Heading To Virginia Beach To Take On No. 14 Virginia Wesleyan In NCAA First Round

New York, NY | Virginia Beach, VA - The John Jay women's volleyball team will put on their dancing shoes for the second straight season. The Bloodhounds, fresh off capturing back-to-back CUNYAC championships, will head to Virginia Beach, VA, to square off against No. 14 Virginia Wesleyan University in the NCAA First Round on Thursday, November 20, at 7:00 p.m. from TowneBank Arena on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan. 
 


In winning their second straight CUNYAC title, the Bloodhounds enter the NCAA Tournament with a 23-6 overall record and claimed the program's first outright regular season title after going 7-0 in league play. John Jay has a five-match win streak entering Thursday. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools. The 23 wins are tied for the most in program history, matching the mark set by the 1997 squad.

John Jay finished the regular season No. 1 in the nation in both aces per set (3.75) and team service aces (379). The Bloodhound held their opponents to a .114 hitting percentage, which ranked 31st in the nation. The Bloodhounds ranked first in the conference in several categories, which include aces per set, assists per set (10.77), hitting percentage (.212), kills per set (11.68), and team service aces. 

Individually, CUNYAC Player of the Year Jadyn Orava ranks first in kills per set (5.16) nationally and is first in the country in points per set (5.89) and fourth in total kills (490). CUNYAC Rookie of the Year Madison Mullan is among the top-50 in the nation in aces per set (0.64) and service aces (64). CUNYAC First Team selection Adrienne Xiao ranks sixth in the country in aces per set (0.89) and is 39th in assists per set (9.49). Her 80 aces are fourth among all Division III players.  

No. 14 Virginia Wesleyan finished the season 31-2, having reached the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) semifinals, where they fell to Washington and Lee University, 3-2. The Marlins earned five All-Conference selections, which included the Player of the Year, Hannah Smith. Smith led the team with 452 kills and 3.96 kills per set while hitting .277. She added 79 aces, 439 digs, and 45 blocks to finish the season with 555 points. Joining Smith were Breana Brooks and Niya Bash, who earned First Team honors, while Alexis Shaw was tabbed to the Second Team, and Skyler Rivers earned Third Team accolades.
