John Jay Removes Acting Tag; Clemente Sosa Named Head Baseball Coach

New York, NY - John Jay College Interim Director of Athletics Brandon Fieland announced on Tuesday, May 13, that the acting tag has been removed from head baseball coach Clemente Sosa's title, as the Athletics Department will retain him as the leader of the baseball program.

"I am extremely pleased to officially name Clemente Sosa as the Head Baseball Coach here at John Jay College," Fieland said. "Coach Sosa was thrusted into the acting role late into the 2024 season and handled everything in such a first-class manner. He has brought the program to new heights by winning the CUNYAC Championship last season, and the program's first since 2007. He brings a renewed energy and enthusiasm to the program and has already done a tremendous job cultivating the alumni. We are excited for the continued success of our baseball program and couldn't be happier to have Coach Sosa leading the way."

Sosa is in his third overall season patrolling the Bloodhound dugout. He finished the 2024 campaign with a 10-8 record, as John Jay won six straight games to close out the season, as the Bloodhounds defeated CCNY, 5-4, in the championship. Coach Sosa has over 25 years of baseball experience, which includes playing at the Division I member Iona College, in New Rochelle, NY and for his native country of the Dominican Republic.

"I am deeply honored and grateful for the opportunity to continue serving as the Head Baseball Coach at John Jay College," commented Sosa. "It is a privilege to lead this incredible group of student-athletes, and I remain committed to fostering their growth both on and off the field. As a former NYPD Detective and former NCIS investigator, it is especially meaningful to mentor and support the next generation of criminal justice professionals. Being part of their academic and personal journeys is a responsibility I hold with great pride. I look forward to continuing to contribute to the mission and values of John Jay College."

He was also part of New York's Finest Baseball Club, where he guided the team to two United States Police and Fire Championship (2012, 2013) and four NABA NYCMBL Championships-winning teams (2008, 2009, 2010, 2011). In his final year of competition in 2012, Sosa's team was named Best Police/Fire team in the country.
