Yvonne Chen Named Assistant Athletic Trainer

New York, NY - John Jay College Head Athletic Trainer Philena Latcha announced the appointment of Yvonne Chen to the position of assistant athletic trainer.

"We're thrilled to welcome Yvonne to John Jay," commented Latcha. "This was a vision that was set in place over the last two years and will immensely benefit our hard-working student-athletes as they continue to strive for greatness in their respective sports. I would like to thank Interim Director of Athletics, Brandon Fieland, Vice President Daniel Matos and the search committee for their due diligence during the search. Yvonne is going to be a game-changer for John Jay Athletics and look forward to her energy and new ideas she brings with her to help care for our student-athletes."

Chen comes to John Jay College after spending the previous three years at Queens College, a fellow City University of New York (CUNY) institution at the Division II level.

"I am honored to join the wonderful staff and student-athletes here at John Jay College," said Chen.  "I am excited to contribute to this amazing program and help elevate the experience and support every student-athlete who comes through our doors. My goal is to make a meaningful impact, not just in terms of performance and care, but in the overall well-being of our athletes as well. I want to thank Brandon Fieland, Philena Latcha, and the hiring committee for their confidence in me and am eager to get started and look forward to being a part of this community."

Chen worked closely with the Knights' 14 intercollegiate programs, providing care and prevention of athletic injuries while implementing treatment. She recently concluded her tenure as an Emergency Medical Technician with the Queens College Summer Camp, a position she has held since the summer of 2018. She commenced her career in collegiate athletics when she first accepted a head manager position for her alma mater, the University of Massachusetts Amherst women's basketball team, before pivoting to strength and conditioning during her senior year.

Her clinical experience includes stops at Stony Brook University, where she was responsible for the football team's preventive care, as well as utilizing injury tracking software, including Sportsware and Healthy Roster. From there, she worked with Molloy University's women's soccer team before joining Adelphi University's women's lacrosse program.

Chen graduated from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst with a degree in Kinesiology before earning a Master's degree in Athletic Training from Stony Brook.

She is a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) and has held an EMT-B Certification since 2017.
